Go Green at Sukhumvit?

We often come across family and friends who are vegetarian but consume eggs or fish or milk or eat non-vegetarian items occasionally. Some of them might have gone the Vegan way, they do not consume any animal products (milk, eggs, meat). Well! here is the news, they need not to have long explanations regarding their diets as their diets have names, read on to learn more!

Firstly, what does going vegetarian mean?

Well, vegetarian diet simply excludes meat and any animal by-products like gelatin or animal-derived rennet.

Why people go vegetarian?

It could be simply because that’s they way they were brought up or due to certain religious practices like Hinduism, especially Jain followers, believe in strictly vegetarian diet. Some people simply become vegetarian as it is difficult to digest the idea of killing animal. I also know of some people who start being vegetarian as to please the gods, they make sacrifice of taste in order to request for certain happiness in life. There are various other reasons too, may be scientific and historical, since the choice of being vegetarian has always existed in our society.

Is it better to be a vegetarian than a non-vegetarian?

I believe the answer to this question is a personal one to all besides, if you are considering to go vegetarian, do consult your doctor or someone more learned as this article merely combines many of my own learnings that I wish to share.

1) Vegetarian diets

  • Fruitarian diet: This diet mainly consists of raw fruit. Yes! Fruits all day long. Steve Jobs was a fruitarian.
  • Lacto vegetarianism: This diet includes dairy products, but abstains from consuming eggs and animal rennet containing food. This diet is commonly followed by Hindus and Jains. The principle of this diet is Ahimsa (Ahimsa is a  concept that suggests all living beings have the spark of the divine spiritual energy; therefore, to hurt another being is to hurt oneself).
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarianism: This diet includes eggs and dairy.
  • Vegan diet: Vegans are basically Vegetarians. In addition to that they do not have any animal products or products produced by animals such as eggs, dairy products, or honey.

2) Semi-vegetarian diets

  • Flexitarian diet: This is basically a vegetarian diet and meat is occasionally consumed.
  • Kangatarian: This diet originates from Australia. Besides being a vegetarian, kangaroo meat is also consumed.
  • Pescetarian diet: A vegetarian diet that includes fish.
  • Plant-based diet: Under this diet, some are totally vegetarian whereas, some consume meat occasionally. I guess its subjective to all.

This article does not suggest which vegetarian diet is better, it merely gives these diets a name. Going vegetarian is quite a brave choice, especially if you have previously tasted meat. Kudos to all Vegetarians. Information in this article has been obtained from mom Wikipedia and Dad Google.
